Coheed and Cambria: 2001-2011

No, it’s not an epitaph for the band. In a recent update on the band’s website, Coheed and Cambria are hinting at a tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of the band tied in with their first album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade.

In a scrolling text on the site’s front page:

Neverender: STTB
Co&Ca 2001-2011
In celebration of our 10th Anniversary
An Evening with Coheed and Cambria
Spring 2011
Full dates and details will be announced Monday, January 10th at 1pm EST

Stay tuned.

(Yes, that is an OG old-school Co&Ca photo…fitting for the post right?)

Ben Sailer’s End Of The Year List

My Year End List, In No Particular Order:

A lot happened in 2010. I finally graduated from college, co-hosted the top-rated show on my university’s radio station, joined a band, and got a lot of growing up done. While I didn’t leave myself much time to write for The 1st Five in that mix, I will tell you all about what I listened to while life was happening over the past twelve months. This is as honest a list of what I jammed out to in 2010 that I can muster, and if you’re taking the time to read it, hopefully you’ll find something new worth listening to.

20: ReviverPotential Wasteland

On this EP, Salt Lake City’s Reviver capture the frustration and despair that comes with living in cultural and geographic isolation in a way that is somewhat reminiscent of Modern Life Is War. It also features guest vocals from Defeater’s Derek Archambault, and fans of either of those aforementioned bands will likely enjoy this as well.

Video: Cynics – You’re Alright

London, England based Cynics have just released a video for their (his) single “You’re Alright”, off of the Stones I’ve Thrown EP. If you enjoy what you hear and see in this video, keep a look out for new Cynics material in 2011, as Giles is heading into the studio sometime in the new year. Additionally, if you’re keen on “You’re Alright”, you can download Stones I’ve Thrown for free right here.

Smoking Popes Featured On The East Timor Benefit Album (Free Download)

Editor’s Note: The free download is of the awesome acapella cover of “I Want Your Sex” not the Smoking Popes track. The Smoking Popes have contributed a track to the East Timor benefit album a couple years ago, a compilation working to provide aid in East Timor, a small country in Southeast Asia. Chris Lawhorn, having some copies of the album left, has compiled a group of CDs and a book of poetry, that can be picked up for $12 (in total). That means six CDs and a book for only $12, all of which goes to charity.

I don’t want to belabor the point with a lot of horror stories here. Put simply, all of the profit from the album goes to Oxfam’s Community Aid Abroad program. The group has been providing aid in East Timor, which has the lowest standard of living in all of Asia.

If you’d like to pick up the package on principle (or interest), click here. Continue reading for a full breakdown of the CDs and the book in the package.

Take A Sneak Peak At Ben Nichols – Last Pale Light In The West LP

Just prior to the very first Revival Tour in 2008, the then opening act Ben Nichols (of Lucero fame) released a CD called The Last Pale Light In The West. The CD is seven songs of highly neglected prime Lucero-esque songs, all based on the Cormac McCarthy novel Blood Meridan: or the Evening Redness in the West, published in 1985.

The release was largely over looked due to inavailablity, having only been released on a number of CDs. Rumors have been floating around ever since 2008 about having the release pressed on vinyl, and it seems as if it’s finally come to fruition. while the Florida based Sabot Productions are yet to announce they’re releasing the record, long-time label contributer Tom Gabel (of Against Me!) posted a photo on his blog of the record, which he states he received from Sabot. There’s no word on when a pre-order will go live, but we can all sit tight knowing that it’s coming while we drool over this photo.

All-American Rejects And Magic Bullet Auction Off Limited Records To Help Charity: Water

When our friends at Magic Bullet Records aren’t releasing the haunting folk albums of Charles Mason or the hypnotic works of This Will Destroy You and Ghastly City Sleeps they like to keep things eclectic by putting out releases people might not expect of them. Like the vinyl for All-American Rejects When The World Comes Down. Now Magic Bullet and the band have teamed up to release 10 extremely limited (obviously) special copies of When The World Comes Down for auction to help benefit Charity: Water, a campaign to help the billion people across the world without access to clean drinking water get access. Here are the details. Continue reading to see a video from Charity: Water that explains a little more about the program, or click here to go to their site.

O Pioneers! Release New Song, Announce Dates With Tigers Jaw, Hostage Calm,

Our friends in O Pioneers! have posted an update about their plans for 2010, plans which sadly hint at the end of the band. Thankfully the Texas band still has some wind in their sails, with an upcoming tour featuring Hostage Calm and on a couple dates Tigers Jaw, as well as a split with Andrew Jackson Jihad coming out on No Idea very soon. Everyone buy the split when it comes out so O Pioneers! will stay together. Do it for the kids. You can stream a new song from the band below courtesy of Bandcamp. The Bouncing Souls Go…Nowhere for the Holidays

Like many of us (myself unfortunately included), the Bouncing Souls wanted to spend the holidays at home, only with a couple hundred of their closest friends in their annual Home for the Holidays party at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The weather, however, had other ideas. The annual extravaganza, after attempts to be rescheduled, has officially been moved to February 9-12. All tickets will be honoured at the new shows. Keep an eye on the H4TH site for any changes or, like Greg’s acoustic set last night, surprises. Kate says…

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS RESCHEDULED!
(12.28.10 – 3:00PM EST)

***saddest update ever from the Brokenhearted Blizzard Wizard***
(aka least popular girl in Asbury)

It is highly unlikely that any roads in Asbury Park will be cleared any time soon and therefore unlikely that we will be able to have a show at The Stone Pony even by tomorrow or Thursday. In anticipation of this likelihood that we will have to continue to cancel or postpone all shows, we have decided to move the entire Home For The Holidays to FEBRUARY 9-12, 2011. We know so many of you have made special arrangements and plans to be here and we wish things could be different. Tickets from the first night (Dec 26) will be honored on Wednesday February 9th, tickets from the 2nd night (Dec 27) will be honored on February 10, the 3rd night (Dec 28) on February 11th, and the 4th night (Dec 29) on February 12. So confusing!!! We are working on the revised schedule (not all the bands will be able to come back :( mope mope) and will announce those on Tuesday, January 11th. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase, but we really hope you can join us in February…

Drowning in tears and waist-deep in snow, with great love from Asbury Park HQ

p.s. For those of you stuck in town, we are working on a consolation party for later… Stay tuned… But please please please, other people, you cannot even drive to town, let alone park, so don’t try to come unless you are walking!!!
