Trent Reznor Wins Oscar & Mentions New HTDA Album

If you kept up with the Oscars last evening, you already know that Trent Reznor (NIN, How To Destroy Angels) and Atticus Ross won the Academy Award for ‘Best Original Score’ for The Social Network soundtrack. The folks over at The NIN Hotline transcribed Trent’s and Atticus’ acceptance speech:

Reznor: “Wow. Is this really happening? When we finished work on The Social Network, we were very proud of our work and happy to just be involved in this film. And to be standing up here in this company is humbling and flattering beyond words. I’d like to especially thank the Academy for recognizing our work here, and David Fincher – David Fincher, thank you so much for the opportunity. I’d also like to thank my wonderful wife Mariqueen, I love you so much.”

Ross: “Time’s nearly out, so I think I might improvise a little. David, everyone who brought the film to life, thank you so much. Trent, I think you’re a genius, a great friend and a genius, my wonderful wife Claudia, and our three children, I love you. Thank you.”

Congratulations Trent and Atticus!

Also, in a brief interview Reznor did with Billboard magazine a few days prior to the Oscars, he mentioned that the new How To Destroy Angels album has been recorded and expected to be released in the Fall. “”I just finished recording a How to Destroy Angels project with my wife. We have to mix it. [It will be out in the] early fall, most likely.”

We will keep you updated as it develops.

Video: Rival Schools “Wring It Out”

After a ten year wait Rival Schools‘ fans are finally about to get a second dose of the band’s truly post-hardcore alt rock sound. With songs that would fit right at home on Matador or Sub Pop during the mid 90s and a collective resume that reads like a whose who of punk rock (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Civ, and Judge to name a few) there’s a reason why Rival Schools‘ fans have stuck around and waited with baited breath for new songs.

Today we bring you the band’s video for the single “Wring It Out.” This band can fight off demons. What could their melodies do for you? Rival Schools‘ new album Pedals hits stores sometime this March.

I Want My MTV: A Plea From A Fan For A Return To The Good Old Days

I want my MTV: A Plea From A Fan For A Return To The Good Old Days

As a music critic, the current landscape of the recording industry is a sad sight to behold. Record sales are down across the board, tours are more expensive than ever, and the radio is a wasteland of corporate playlists where a town is lucky if they have a local DJ, let alone one who has programming power. With the exception of a few lucky artists, your Bieber’s or Gaga’s, the musical world of 2011 lacks any sort of mass cultural awareness.

When the Arcade Fire won the Grammy for album of the year the response from most Americans was “who the hell is Arcade Fire?” It’s enough to make you scream. In fact I did. I screamed a sentence I never thought would cross my lips.

“I want my MTV.”

Not the MTV of today, that bastion of trashy teen moms, alcoholic ethnic stereotypes, and desperate cries for attention in the name of being “edgy.” No I want something more. The golden visage of gleaming pop culture I remember from my youth, a constant binge and purge of art, music, movies, and, yes, even reality television. MTV wasn’t a representative of art, but like any good cynic who wears a badge of being one of the cool kids it was impossible for it to completely ignore art. And at its best MTV was an example of how pop culture is more than simply the brands and bands we’re told to like.

One of our favourite labels, Grave Mistake Records, has just announced that New Jersey/Brooklyn based Night Birds are currently in the studio recording their debut LP for the label. The record, The Other Side Of Darkness, is due out sometime during summer 2011, and will be the band’s second release on the label after 2010′s Self Titled EP.

Night Birds just wrapped up a tour with Government Warning, and recently released the long-overdue Midnight Movies 7″.

Frank Turner says England Keep My Bones

Frank Turner has a new record coming out this summer. His fourth solo record, England Keep My Bones is slated to be released via Epitaph Records on 7th June. He says, “I can’t wait to get this record out there. The new songs have been going down really well live, but I think that when people hear the studio versions they’re going to go nuts. I really think it’s the strongest set of material I’ve had on one record.” England Keep My Bones will feature Franz Nicolay (ex-Hold Steady), Emily Barker, Chris T-T, and Andy Yorke (Unbelievable Truth)

He will be hitting North America on a short jaunt at the end of April. More dates are, presumably, forthcoming:

April 26 – El Mocambo – Toronto, ON
April 28 – Knitting Factory – Brooklyn, NY
April 29 – Red Palace – Washington, DC
May 2 – Beat Kitchen – Chicago, IL
May 4 – Bottom of the Hill – San Francisco, CA
May 5 – Hotel Cafe – Los Angeles, CA

Mikey Erg – Valentine’s Day EP

Mikey Erg
Valentine’s Day EP (Self Titled EP, Heart Shaped 12″, etc)
Paper + Plastick Records

Mikey Erg is up to his usual workings: releasing as many records as he possibly can without worry of spreading himself too thin. The beauty of the situation is that he doesn’t have to, as he, and seemingly every band he partakes in tend get better and better with each successive release. This two-song 12” EP is a little on the extravagant side, what with it being $6 for a little under four minutes of music, and the fact that it’s shaped like a giant heart, but it’s about time Mikey had a canvas to paint as over the top as his love for music is. The EP was released early morning on Valentines Day, and wasn’t available for much longer than it takes to listen to it; what it lacks in duration it makes up with conviction.

Track Debut: The Cerberus Crew “Ready 4 W.A.R. (Whatever Approach 2 Rap)”

I’ve never heard of any of these rappers before but since we really do listen to everything we’re sent they had just as much a chance of any one of getting a news post today. This track “Ready 4 W.A.R. (Whatever Approach 2 Rap)” is the first release from The Cerberus Crew consisting of Jayy Starr from Los Angeles, CA, Motzy The Moth from Philly, PA and Kartel Kobain from Suffolk, VA. The warm bop of the keyboard production is slick juxtaposition of grimy lyrics. This is well worn territory in hip hop and the fact that these three rappers were able to still wring compelling blood from this stone speaks highly of them. Stream the track below or download it from the player.
