No Trigger
Tycoon
No Sleep Records
In 2006 No Trigger burst onto the punk scene with their debut full length Cayoneer. After a slew of extremely positive reviews for their fast-paced melodic hardcore stylings and a handful of international tours, No Trigger essentially up and disappeared. Fast-forward through five years of inactivity to find the band releasing their first 7” since Cayoneer, Be Honest. After alluding to even more new material, a second full length, Tycoon, has finally has finally been released by No Sleep Records. Despite the wait, Tycoon sounds like an immediate follow up Canyoneer.
In No Trigger’s six-year absence, the band has become faster, louder, tighter and angrier than they ever have been. Like Kid Dynamite before them, No Trigger blend vicious snaps of hardcore with melodic choruses and hooks, resulting in some of the most anthemic punk rock I’ve heard in years. Tycoon proves that Cayoneer wasn’t simply a flash in the pan, and in fact likens the earlier effort to a warning shot of what was to come. Without changing too much in the format of their songwriting (the songs are still ~2-3 minutes in length, totally a little over half an hour in full), the band still pack some twists and turns, and have began to accentuate their strengths.
Lyrical content found on Tycoon makes a significant shift from the political content that defined the genre in the later 1990’s and early aughts (alongside Strike Anywhere, Rise Against, and A Wilhelm Scream to name a few) to a more personable level never placed on the forefront by the band before. If you’re anything like me, you may have let your copy of Cayoneer slip to the back of your mind and/or your record shelf. You’re not to blame – the punk scene has changed a tremendous amount since No Trigger first made their appearance – Tycoon will make you regret ever forgetting about this band. Even for a second.
