No Trigger
Be Honest
Mightier Than Sword Records
No Trigger are back with their new 7” entitled Be Honest, out on Mightier Than Sword Records. The 7” features the first new-recorded material from the band since 2006’s Cayoneer, so needless to say, people have been waiting for this day for a while now. While most independent bands feel the pressure to release music as often as possible in an attempt to stay relevant in the ever-changing punk genre, that pressure has long come and gone for No Trigger. By definition, any material released after such a long hiatus is a bonus; the band was essentially dead in the eyes of many, including the band members. However, as with all reunion releases, the pressure for quality music overcomes all else.
The A-side of Be Honest, “Commonwealth”, aside from being less than 1:30 in length, is exactly what you’d expect from No Trigger. The song is fast, concise, and about Massachusetts. However, I do have a slight bone to pick with it. I understand that the record comes with a full color sleeve, and poster, after all, Mightier Than Sword have been quickly making a name for themselves for offering some of the best record packaging around today, but I’ve always had a problem with two-song 7”s. Sure, “Commonwealth” is a great song, but none of us waited four years for a 1:22 of No Trigger.
That being said, the B-side, “Tooth”, completely makes up for anything you were left wanting after “Commonwealth”. The song takes on more of a melodic stance, being more primarily sing-a-long based. It’d be hard to call the track anything but three minutes of chorus. This is what No Trigger are good at, and it shows. Most importantly, the band has let us all know that they’re back. No longer do we have to rely on Pacer and Shook Ones for all of our melodic hardcore (or as Caleb Lionheart said it best, “think hardcore, play poppunk”). No Trigger’s next full length is due out in 2011, and Be Honest is sure to hold you over until then.
