The Civil Wars, the indie folk duo composed of singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White, are set to release a new album this coming August 6th. The self-titled record will be their second full-length since their formal start in 2009.
For now, the duo have premiered a new song, “The One That Got Away”, which finds them in a more aggressive and multi-instrumental approach. Listen below.
Daytrotter, the music website that has featured countless popular and indie acts recording live in their studios, has launched a vinyl series presenting a few of those acts. The series, titled “Daytrotter Presents” is being launched with its first release being a split 12″ of The Civil Wars and The Lumineers. The pre-orders are ready and live for this first 12″. With an open-run until the last day of pre-orders through July 3rd, you can order the 12″ by itself ($35), or at discounted amount ($25.25) if you’re already a Daytrotter subscriber/member. Or you can get it for FREE (plus shipping) if you sign up for an annual membership for $24. Multiple choices, yes. Here’s the additional info from Daytrotter:

Writer’s Comment: Right off the bat, the asking price of $35 for non-member for this split 12” is a bit much. Some would even say preposterous. Most records nowadays, even being 180-gram vinyl and deluxe packaging, go for $20 or less. Once it starts getting into the higher amounts for a single 12” LP then the questioning of the label/source/seller starts. What has warranted the price? For a new record about to be released let alone. Even the discounted cost to members is steep. I am suspecting that it’s all strategic move to steer most people to get or gift an annual membership for the $24 since being the lowest and most cost-effective and “bang-for-your-buck” pricing tier. I’m at a loss for words and can’t really justify or truly understand and accept the asking prices.
